MIDLAND (GB)

POSTAL HISTORY SOCIETY

ABOUT US

Meetings are held monthly, on a Saturday, from September to May. A number of these meetings are in the Birmingham area, while others are held in the south midlands and at Warwick. Traditionally there is an all-day meeting with lunch in December and a further all-day meeting with one or more related postal history groups, including the Bristol PHG and the Northamptonshire Philatelic Society.

Members receive the Society's journal 'Midland Mail' four times a year. This includes original articles on a wide range of topics relating to the postal history of the Midlands. It also includes detailed reports of the displays given to the Society and news of the Society's research projects. The Society gained the prestigious Rowland Hill Award for Research in 1996 and its publications and journal have won major awards, both at home and abroad. It also gained a Gold Award at the 2007 New Zealand Philatelic Literature Exhibition for its book, 'The Midland Counties Mileage Marks and Mail Routes to London, 1784-1840'. In 2013 the Society published the “British County Catalogue of Postal History – Midlands Edition”, based on the classic catalogues of British postal history, which were published by the late Martin Willcocks and the late Professor Barrie Jay.

The Society participates in MIDPEX, the Midland Philatelic Federation's bi-annual exhibition and fair for specialist societies, where the Society has a table and display. A popular auction is held after the Annual General Meeting in the spring and the Society has an excellent library available to its members.
